What is self-regulation?
· The ability to monitor and control our own behavior, emotions, or thoughts, altering them in accordance with the demands of the situation. It includes the abilities to inhibit first responses, to resist interference from irrelevant stimulation, and to persist on relevant tasks even when we don't enjoy them. (J.L. Cook, G. Cook, 2009) · In simplest terms, self-regulation refers to how efficiently and effectively a child deals with a stressor and then recovers (Porges, 2011; Lillas & Turnbull, 2009; McEwen, 2002). What is mature self-regulation? · monitoring one’s own behavior, thoughts, and strategies · considering how successfully we are meeting the demands of the situation · the ability to change aspects of our current functioning as needed to fit the situation or to accomplish a goal.
